  • car on flooded streetEvacuate from Flood Hazard Areas in times of impending flood or when advised to do so by the Police or Fire Department.

  • Listen to a battery powered radio for the location of emergency shelters. Follow instructions of local officials.

  • Know the flood warning procedures for your area. During heavy and prolonged rain events, check the local radio and TV news for flood and tsunami warning alerts.

  • If water rises in your home before you can evacuate, go to the top floor, attic or roof.

  • Floodwater is not clean. Floods carry mud, farm chemicals, road oil, and other noxious substances that may cause health hazards. If you come in contact with flood water, wash hands and body with clean water.

  • Follow local instructions regarding the safety of drinking water.

  • Don't go near, swim in, or drive through floodwater.

  • Keep children and pets away from floodwater, ditches, culverts and storm drains.

  • Fast or even slow-moving floodwater can float buildings, collapse walls, damage roads and bridges. Try to get to a safe building or reach higher ground outside of the flooded area.

  • Avoid downed power lines and broken gas lines.

  • Do not attempt to cross flowing water. Six inches of moving water can cause you to fall. If you must walk in water, pass where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the depth and firmness of the ground.

  • If you need to evacuate, wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes. Take your Disaster Supply Kit. Lock your home. Use travel routes specified by local officials.

  • If time permits, let others know when you are leaving and where you are going.

  • Make arrangements for pets; they will not be allowed in public shelters.
