Junior Lifeguard Assistant Program

Program Information

The Junior Lifeguard Assistant Program is designed for returning Oceanside Junior Lifeguards ages 14–17 who are interested in developing leadership skills and learning what it takes to become a future lifeguard.

Junior Lifeguard Assistants play an important role in supporting the Junior Lifeguard Program. Participants assist lifeguard instructors, mentor younger junior lifeguards, and gain hands-on experience in beach and ocean safety. The program focuses on building confidence, mental and physical fitness, teamwork, respect for others, and stewardship of our coastal environment. There is no registration required and no fee to participate as a Junior Lifeguard Assistant.

Junior Lifeguard Assistants will:

• Assist and support Junior Lifeguard instructors

• Mentor and lead younger Junior Lifeguards

• Shadow professional lifeguards in the lifeguard tower

• Participate in lifeguard workouts and training activities

• Learn about beach operations, ocean safety, and rescue preparation

• Earn community service hours

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the Junior Lifeguard Assistant Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be between the ages of 14–17

• Have prior experience in the Oceanside Junior Lifeguard Program

• Pass the scheduled tryouts, which include:

  • A run–swim–run test

  • An interview

Tryout Date:

• Saturday, June 6, 2026

• Time: 9:00 a.m.

Tryouts are open to all eligible applicants. If you are 14 years old, you are encouraged to try out. If you are not selected as a Junior Lifeguard Assistant, you will still have the opportunity to enroll in the Junior Lifeguard Program for the summer.
