Fire Extinguishers are organized into five classes: A, B, C, and two specialty classes D & K.

Fire Extinguishers are labeled with standard symbols identifying the types of fires they can fight. Using the wrong type of fire extinguisher can put yourself in danger or make the fire worse.

1. Class A Fires involve wood, cloth, paper, rubber, plastic and “ordinary” combustibles.
2. Class B Fires involve flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil lacquers, paint and oil based products.
3. Class C Fires involve energized electrical equipment such as wiring, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, data processing panels and appliances.
4. Class D fire extinguishers are commonly found in a chemical laboratory. They are for fires that involve combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium. These types of extinguishers also have no numerical rating, nor are they given a multi- D fires only.
5. Class K fire extinguishers are intended for use on fires that involve vegetable oils, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances. These extinguishers are generally found in commercial kitchens, such as those found in restaurants, cafeterias, and caterers. Class K extinguishers are now finding their way into the residential market for use in kitchens.

Traffic Calming Devices 

California Fire Code Section 5.3.4.1, Traffic calming devices.  Traffic calming devices shall be prohibited unless approved by the fire code official.

Fire Department Approval and Submittal Requirements:                                                       

• A digital site plan shall be submitted to the Oceanside Community Risk Reduction Division for review. Utilize the Oceanside Fire Department Plan Submittal portal on the website.
• Provide a letter indicating the scope of work on a HOA or business letterhead.
• All street names along with road widths shall be included.
• Indicate if streets are public or private. If streets are public, the city of Oceanside Traffic Control Division will also be required to review the application.
• Show all proposed locations of speed humps or speed lumps. Specify and provide detail of the speed hump or lump you are proposing with the submittal.
• Spacing between speed humps or lumps shall be between 260 to 500 feet.
• Speed bumps or lumps shall not be installed in front of driveways or on a sharp curve.
